Parade of Cakes

Due to high demand and readers who are facinated by my cake project, yes, yes, here are the photos of the cakes I've baked to date...although missing is my week three Apple Cinnamon Crunch Cake which was devoured before I had a chance to set up the photo studio; and my first effort at the Classic Pound Cake. I made v.1 in a bundt pan, and it turned out to be rather petite. It tasted just fine, very tender crumb, but I thought I could do better. My v.2 version was baked in a loaf pan and I made a cut across the top for decorative purposes after it had baked about 20 minutes. I thought it turned out well and by noon Tuesday, there was only a nub of the heel left.

I got this recipe from Maridel Ketchum several years ago. Maridel was a librarian at Chaska Library and every time I bake this, I get raves in part because the frosting is so delicious.

Red Velvet Cake week 1: I got this recipe from Maridel Ketchum several years ago. Maridel was a librarian at Chaska Library and every time I bake this, I get raves in part because the creamy frosting is so delicious. I got a little fancy with this one, and grated dark chocolate on the top.

While v.1 was baked in a bundt pan, I like the way it looks in a loaf pan. This will be so good this summer with fresh strawberries or raspberries.

Classic Pound Cake v.2:

Rose Levin Berenbaum is a genius. I love this cake book; she also has a new one called "Heavenly Cakes" which just came out last fall. It has beautiful color photographs to inspire the pastry chef. And, for those so inclined, there is a Web site devoted to this cookbook. The participants make one cake a week and are working their way through the book. I would do it, but I think they're a pretty serious bunch. I think I'll just lurk for a while.
